High-Lift Hood Struts. There is no substitute.

grimmspeed hood strut comparison

Tired of that ugly OEM hood prop blocking your view of that beautiful boxer engine? Always wanted to open your hood with just a couple fingers? Annoyed that the hood prop is always in your way while you’re working in your engine bay? GrimmSpeed to the rescue. With meticulous design and quality materials, this kit delivers in a big way. We hate to use the "P" word, but designing this kit to be perfectly balanced was a requirement. Lift the hood halfway and you'll find a generous neutral zone. Leave your hood here for a sleek look at that local car show. Alternatively, a flick of the wrist is all that's required to coax your hood into its fully opened position. To close, simply hold the hood below its neutral zone and let go. No need to risk scratches or deformation by pushing your hood closed.

Quick Specs

  • Eliminates OEM Hood Prop - No risk of hood falling, more access when wrenching
  • CNC Machined Brackets - Machined for a perfect fit
  • Premium Quality Struts - Larger strut body for smoother operation, made in the USA!
  • Durable Hard Anodized Finish - Protects brackets from corrosion with an OEM finish
  • FARO Arm Designed - Allows more precise design and a stronger, better fitting product

Design
We began by mapping the hood and engine bay for a number of test vehicles in 3D CAD. From there, a lifting linkage was designed, analyzed, prototyped and tested. Our in-house 3D printer facilitated a fast, efficient design cycle and we were able to move into production using some of the worlds most advanced CNC machining equipment. What that means for you is a system that will fit and operate correctly, every single time, for years to come. The fender ball studs were also designed specifically for the application, to adapt our high-quality, American Made struts to the metric threads found on your Subaru. What about those struts, you ask? They're beefy. Custom built to our exacting specifications, these struts feature a large diameter body that provides excellent opening force without sacrificing smoothness and control.

Materials
With the use and exposure that a hood strut kit will see on a regular basis, material selection and finishing options are critically important. All brackets are machined from locally sourced 6061 Aluminum. After an initial quality inspection, each part is anodized with a sleek, black finish. The threaded ball studs are machined from Stainless Steel to ensure that no potentially corrosive material is being introduced to your vehicles chassis. The next key component is the struts themselves. More specifically, these are referred to as gas springs. Manufactured in the USA, these are of the highest quality and are used by OEMs around the world. These custom valved units (to perfectly match the weight of the WRX and STI hoods) are paired with clear zinc hardware and a quick-release ball and socket. Last, but certainly not least, is the included hardware. All hardware is grade 8.8 or higher and black zinc coated for longevity.

Fitments

- 2002-2007 Subaru Impreza/WRX/STI (GD Chassis)

- 2004-2005 Saab 9-2x

*** Ensure that the ball and socket joint is towards the outside of the vehicle after install. NOT on the top of the bracket, or towards the inside. Reference the provided photos is necessary. ***

  1. Really cool and super easy to install

    Posted by Rich

Easier to install than the instructions show (socket clips don't need to be released). Four bolts, that's it - 10 minutes if you goof around and take your time.

Smooth and strong struts that should have been OEM.

Note to Saab 9-2x installers: Fender bolts to remove are the usual 10mm, not 12mm.

Only question mark or potential for concern is the hood mounted bracket is made of a hard/durable plastic. If it was made of metal it might feel more durable, but may not be necessary, because it seems tough enough for what it does.

    Couldn't be happier with them.

  2. Every Subaru needs these.

    Posted by Unknown

I totally love these hood struts. How I lived without them before I'll never know. I gave the review a 4-star instead of 5-star due to the cons listed below. Fix these and its a 5-star product easily.

    Pros:
    - Very easy to install.
    - No more hood prop getting in your way.
    - Easy open and close of your hood.
    - Looks totally sick when you open your hood, will impress all your car friends and look amazing at shows/meets.
    - If you're a tall guy like me you don't have to bend over so much when you're elbow deep in your engine bay and mess up your back.

    Cons:
    - Included instructions are online instructions are out of date featuring an old version of the struts, and have poor quality pictures. (Still easy to install, but I could see this being an issue for some.)
    - Grimmspeed logo placard just kinda looks like some brass-silver colored square on the struts from more than a couple feet away. Would love if it was a silver w/black logo or stamped so the logo actually stands out. I may remove the placards and find something else to go on there.

  3. hood struts

you got to get yourself a pair of these they totally rock, and so simple to put on takes about 5 minutes

  4. useful

Must have. Easy install. Worth the money if you ever open your hood.

  5. Great buy

    Posted by Unknown

Easy to install, arrived quick, good replacement for oem hood prop

  6. Brilliant!

    Posted by Unknown

I have received a lot of compliments from people about them. I have sent them your direction to buy them. Some people are freaked out when they see the hood fly up so far.

I have amazing access to the bay now to work on the car and can show off the full bay at shows. If there is one thing I would like is to hold the strut at a certain height to I can tie a lanyard on the latch to have it a bit lower for shows. Maybe so kind of latch or hook that connects to the strut.

  7. Hood struts

This is a must have! Makes working on the vehicle so much easier as it puts the hood close to a 90 degree angle and removes the prop rod. Just be careful as the hood opens, as it moves quick and be careful closing it.

  8. Best Hood Struts I've ever owned

    Posted by AJ Garza

These have by far been the best Hood Struts I've ever owned for a car.. I get major wow factor when I have to open my hood for anyone from people at car meets to the friendly mechanics at my local Subaru Dealership. They open the hood far beyond any normal strut I've owned, making maintenance extremely easy on my '07 STi. Instillation took maybe at most 10 minuets for both sides and 10 more minuets of sheer amazingness checking out how beautifully they look and preform. If your looking for the best all around hood struts for your factory hood then look no further than these.. you'll be as amazed as I was from the first time opening the hood to the first wrenching session and every time you have to open it from there..
Great job with design from the folks at Grimmspeed..

  9. Super high, easy engine work

    Posted by Jake

So I've gotten a lot of compliments when at car meets or just working on my car with friends. Some people have freaked out for a split second when they open my hood and the hood goes higher than they were expecting haha the only reason that I give it 4/5 stars is because for some reason the passenger side hood strut has bent. It was working fine for a while, installed correctly but it somehow slipped and is bent. Still works so I haven't requested a new one. Just FYI.

  10. Why didn't I do this sooner?!

    Posted by Kentrik

The bushing that holds my hood prop in blew out forever ago, and of course the plastic part that holds it over the radiator cracked like 6 months into ownership of the car. Bleh. But, these were quite possibly the best idea anyone could have come up with. Install was a breeze - took like 10 minutes - I did it in the car wash on my lunch break, while waiting for the engine degreaser to soak in a little. The only downside to these is that I have no need to try to fit a little plastic thing in my GrimmSpeed radiator shroud now, which they machined it for.

Aww, who am I kidding? There is NO DOWNSIDE to these!
