Tired of that ugly OEM hood prop blocking your view of that beautiful FA20 boxer engine? Always wanted to open your feather-light hood with just a couple fingers? Annoyed that the hood prop is always in your way while you’re working in your engine bay? GrimmSpeed to the rescue. A close collaboration between FT86Club.com members and GrimmSpeed, this kit delivers in a big way. We hate to use the "P" word, but designing this kit to be perfectly balanced was a requirement. Lift the hood halfway and you'll find a generous neutral zone. Leave your hood here for a sleek look at that local car show. Alternatively, a flick of the wrist is all that's required to coax your hood into its fully opened position. To close, simply hold the hood below its neutral zone and let go. No need to risk scratches or deformation by pushing your hood closed.
Quick Specs
Design
This kit was designed using our in-house FARO arm and an accompanying suite of CAD software. We began by mapping the BRZ/FR-S hood and engine bay in 3D CAD (see one of our engineers in action below). From there, a lifting linkage was designed, analyzed, prototyped and tested. After months of testing and revisions, the brackets went into production using the latest in laser cutting and CNC bending equipment. What that means for you is a system that will fit and operate correctly, every single time, for years to come. What about the struts, you ask? They're beefy. Custom built to our exacting specifications, these struts feature a large diameter body that provides excellent opening force without sacrificing smoothness and control. Rounding it all out is a heavy duty textured black DuPont powdercoat and black zinc hardware.
Materials
With the use and exposure that a hood strut kit will see on a regular basis, material selection and finishing options are critically important. All brackets are produced from a mild steel alloy that maintains its integrity after laser cutting and bending. After thorough cleaning, the parts are all powdercoated a durable DuPont texture black. The next key component is the struts themselves. More specifically, these are referred to as gas springs. Manufactured in the USA, these are of the highest quality and are used by OEMs around the world. These custom valved units (to perfectly match the weight of the BRZ/FRS hood) are paired with clear zinc hardware and a quick-release ball and socket. Last, but certainly not least, is the included hardware. All hardware is grade 8.8 or higher and zinc coated for longevity.

easy install, works great. no more stupid hood prop
Believe it or not, this was the first 'engine bay' modification I have bought for my cars. I bought it to prepare myself for changing the spark plugs and maybe upgrading to the GS CAI. It was actually a bit difficult for me to figure out how to put it on at first (even after watching the install video). I didn't realize you had to lift the hood up so the strut could fit in properly. Otherwise, this product does what it says and it looks great. My car now has struts like my mum's Lexus!
Easy bolt on installation and the components are much higher quality than the broom stick I previously used to work on the car. I feel like I should have bought this setup a long time ago.
Make this mod your first and start enjoying work under the hood. These struts take 5 minutes to put in, no drilling or cutting at all. They lift the hood super high and clear out of your way. Fit and finish are superb, and the GS badges are a very nice touch. Every 86 owner needs these.
Hood struts are a must have for this platform and with the “cheap” ones already around $60, I felt that a quality part with great reviews was worth the extra coin. Directions and videos make install quick and easy. Great fit and finish. Textured paint on brackets should be durable.
Easy install, perfectly balanced for the stock hood. One ding is the weight of the kit - the main support arms (which are up against the hood) are really thick heavy steel. If you are a weight weenie this is a negative, for the average person probably not an issue.
So I bought the hood struts since they looked the best when it came to quality, and that’s what I got great quality... hood opens up fast and easy, with all this room for activities!!!! Happy with the product and was my first mod on my frs
I was tired of putting the hood prop up every time I pop my hood (quite often) Installing these was a breeze, it didnt take long to really set the car apart from the rest of the crowd. Install should take about 30 minutes and install difficulty was a 2 out of 10.
I had origianly sent a review talking about how I thought the bolts were incorrect in the kit and possibly even the wrong trhead. Bluntly, I was wrong about the thread. Here's what was causing me grief: the OEM bolts have a point that allows it to quickly line-up and begin grabbing the hood threads; the replacement bolts' ends were almost completely flat and I couldn't get the thread to catch at all. Finally took a little more time today in the driveway and the ONE upper bolt (which was the first I had tried to install) with the bracket FINALLY grabbed (the lower had gone in without incident). The other two went in with a minor amount to jiggling. So, the kit installed and I feel pretty foolish for not being more patient. By the way, the use of those struts makes a BIG difference in the hood's stability.
Fast shipping. Easy install and perfect fitment. Super happy with these!
So glad I choose GrimmSpeed over others on the market, head and shoulders above the competition. Great value and easy to install. Should have come this way from the factory.
I picked these up during the GS black friday/cyber monday sale, and installed today. Pre-assembled inside, referencing the online pdf, which either has the pictures out of order, or my browser/version of Adobe was jacking it up, but none the less, it's easy, and fairly obvious. More bolts were included than expected, you can replace and not reuse any of the OEM bolts, nice touch. Everything fit as expected, and they function great. A solo install could be done, but an extra set of hands does help. Since I work as a design engineer, I typically find things I'd do different, but I can't really say I'd change anything on this design, other than try to cut some weight from the upper hood brackets, but that's just me...I do race cars, weight is evil, LOL. Nice job!
Cake to install, awesome quality,
Perfect contact, fast shipping, good offer. Everything ok! Thank you.
Easy to install & perfect fit. Although it's a shame Toyota/Subaru didn't include this as standard, Grimspeed certainly concidered the necesseties and delivered a good, solid product. Fast overseas shipping. A very satisfied customer ideed.
Great quality, incredibly fast shipping and easy to install. Very happy with this product:) 10/10 A+
This kit fits perfectly and looks great. Perfect balance on the struts. I highly recommend this kit.
Love the Grimmspeed hood struts, easy to install, quality product, works even better than expected.
Well this thread on the ft86club forum says it all, but i will sum it up anyways. Time, effort, consideration, high quality materials and massive community involvement make these hood struts like none other on the market. Another functional, subtle yet impressive set brought to you by Grimmspeed. Who would have thought opening/closing your hood and working within the engine bay would be so appreciated from such a simple addition. :) http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22658
