COMING SOON: GrimmSpeed Short Throw Shifter for 2004–2021 STI

What Is a Short Throw Shifter and Why Does It Matter?

A short throw shifter changes the geometry of your shifting mechanism to reduce the distance the gear lever needs to travel between gears. This modification doesn’t just make shifting feel quicker—it actually is quicker. By shortening the arc between gear changes, drivers can enjoy faster, more precise shifts with less effort and wrist movement. The benefit? Improved control, a more connected driving experience, and an edge when every second counts, whether you're at a track day or just carving up your favorite backroad. For performance-minded STI owners, a short throw shifter is one of the most impactful bolt-on upgrades you can make to your drivetrain feel.

Engineered for True Connection

At its core, the GrimmSpeed STI Short Throw Shifter is all about driver connection. We’ve shortened the throw considerably to create a crisper, more mechanical shift experience, but done so in a way that preserves the OEM knob position. That means no awkward angles, no interference with your center console, and no unnecessary modifications. It’s a straightforward, bolt-on design made to feel anything but standard.

The result is a dramatic improvement in shift feel and precision while maintaining full compatibility with the STI’s factory reverse lockout system. It fits all STI models from 2004 through 2021 and accepts any shift knob with an M12x1.25 thread, factory or aftermarket.

Precision Where It Counts

This is not just a modified OEM part; it’s a fully re-engineered component designed from scratch. The center section of the shifter is CNC-machined from 6061-T6 billet aluminum and finished with black anodizing for both protection and a refined look. The upper shaft is constructed from A513-T5 DOM steel, while the lower ball is CNC-machined from 1045 steel—both zinc-plated to withstand corrosion over time. The shift boot plate is made from laser-cut 14-gauge 1008 steel, also zinc-plated for durability.

We’ve also replaced the stock center bushings with Enduro MAX sealed ball bearings, known in the mountain biking world for their high load capacity and durability under stress. These bearings are specifically designed to handle pivoting loads (like those experienced during shifting) and feature full-contact, double-lip labyrinth seals for protection against dirt and moisture. Thanks to their construction, they support up to 35–40% more load than traditional radial bearings, ensuring smooth, consistent action for the life of the part.

Each unit features laser-etched reference marks to allow for precise throw and knob height adjustments. The upper shaft is adjustable up to 0.75 inches (±0.375"), and the shift knob height can vary from +0.3" above stock to -1.0" below, depending on throw settings. Throw reduction is adjustable from 0% to 26.3% compared to OEM.

Design Built on Data

We started this project by 3D scanning the OEM STI shifter and modeling the full linkage assembly. From there, we simulated shifting geometry in CAD to identify how we could optimize feel, precision, and travel. With multiple design iterations tested through 3D printing and vehicle fitment, we refined the final version before moving into full production with real materials.

Comparing the OEM shift lever to our new design at its most aggressive setting shows a clear advantage:

  • OEM Arc Length: 83.83 mm

  • GrimmSpeed Arc Length: 61.77 mm

  • Arc Reduction: ~26.3%

This measurable improvement in throw—without affecting the shifter’s neutral position—is one of the most satisfying upgrades you can make to your STI.

At maximum reduction, some slight contact may occur between the shifter linkage and the rubber gasket in first and third gears. This won’t affect drivability, but we’ll clearly mark a recommended adjustment limit in the install guide. While some drivers may choose to trim the gasket to achieve full travel, we won’t advise it in our documentation.

Stay Tuned

This is just the beginning. The GrimmSpeed STI Short Throw Shifter is almost here. Keep an eye out for more photos, install details, and final specs in the near future.

Your STI deserves a shift that feels as sharp as the rest of your ride.
